How to score Asia teaching jobs – our 5-step plan
Asia teaching jobs are some of the most coveted teaching jobs in the TEFL world. For good reason, too. We’re talking destinations like Thailand and Vietnam, where you’ll explore paradise islands, hike jungle-covered mountain ranges, and encounter mysterious Buddhist temple complexes topped by golden pagodas. The continent also boasts some of the best-paid positions out there. Countries like Japan and Hong Kong can crank up monthly pay packets to $3,000+, and there even bonuses on top, like reimbursed airfare and accommodation assistance.
Tempted? You’re not alone. Thousands of teachers every year look to put their TEFL skills into practice in this corner of the globe. That’s why we’ve got this step-by-step guide to scoring Asia teaching jobs. It goes from the basic qualifications through to applications, all to get you tuk-tuking around Bangkok or munching on udon in Tokyo before the year is through. Let’s begin…
1. Get a TEFL qualification
This should be the first port of call for anyone wanting to become a TEFL teacher. That goes no matter if you’re on the hunt for Asia teaching jobs or short-term European summer camp jobs. Almost every employer around the globe will ask for one of these. The best ones to get are industry-accredited courses. Also, try to complete at least a 120-hour course. Popular Asian destinations like Thailand, Hong Kong, and Korea usually require more than your basic entry-level certificate.
2. Decide where you want to teach in Asia
Asia is a vast place. It’s the largest continent of the lot, spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the fringes of Europe, the tropical south of India all the way to the tundra of northern Russia. It’s really important to consider that when you come to teach, because all the countries contained within will offer something very different to budding TEFL teachers. Some don’t have astronomical pay rates – Cambodia, Laos – but might have lower requirements (great if you don’t have a degree, for example) and a rawer cultural experience. Others will be economically developed destinations with higher wages but also stricter requirements – think Japan and South Korea.
3. The job hunt
Once you’ve decided on where you want to teach, you need to find a job in that location. The simplest way to do that is to Google private language institutions and start sending out your CV and cover letter. However, that method tends to work better in Europe, where the vast majority of TEFL jobs are in non-state schools. In Asia, it could pay off to opt for an organized program like the myTEFL Teach in Thailand or Teach in Taiwan package. They give a guaranteed placement for between six and 12 months, a work visa and permit, and even accommodation assistance.
4. Visa applications
Congratulations! You’ve scored one of those coveted Asia teaching jobs. The chances are you’re now going to have to get some legal stuff sorted before you can jet over and start exploring the Shinto shrines of Tokyo or the buzzy wet markets of Shanghai. Of course, it’s going to be a different process in every country. Check out visa guides and foreign office guidance to see what you need to do. Or contact the embassy of whichever country you’re moving to for more information. Another way to complete this step is to sign up to one of our Asia teaching jobs programs. They usually have visas or visa assistance included
5. Flights, moving, and accommodation
Here’s the fun part! You’re almost ready to start your new life in the spice-plumed lands of Asia. First, though, you’re going to need a ride there. Check out flight comparison sites like Momondo and Skyscanner to get the best deals. Oh, and never leave it too late – most long-haul flights from Europe and the US to Asia will skyrocket in price in the 30 days leading up to departure. Now’s also the time to start thinking about where you’re going to live when you land. There are great expat Facebook groups for that in most major city destinations, but you can also try Airbnb and other sharing platforms to get started. Alternatively, our TEFL jobs packages offer help with accommodation in popular spots like Thailand and Vietnam.
