About life in Taiwan

Taiwan is a dynamic, hi-tech, export-driven economy with arguably the best food in Asia. It’s a great destination for well-paid teaching positions, but has so much more to offer than just a nice salary. Influenced by the Dutch, Spaniards, Japanese, and Chinese, Taiwan is full of hidden surprises. Modern cities, ancient temples, gorgeous hilly terrain, hot spring resorts – along with colourful night markets and street vendors make it a dream destination, and myTEFL can make it happen for you.

I get up crazy early, and need to get out as soon as I wake up. So, coffee in hand I explored the side streets and back alleys of my new city. Most mornings I passed a group of people practicing Tai Chi in a park near my apartment. This morning, I stopped to watch, and the lady leading the group, a very lively, vivacious woman, beckoned me to join in. I’m always ready to try something new, so I joined one of the rows and tried to follow along. After a deceptively easy looking, but gruelling work-out, the group scattered, many of them patting me on the back, and asking me to join them again. Awesome!

Wiping the sweat from her face, my charming leader approached me. She spoke almost no English, and I did not speak a word of Mandarin, but she pointed to herself and said ‘Tiffany’ and I did the same and said ‘Marissa’. Tiffany spent her day showing me, a complete stranger, around Tainan City! It was difficult at first, but after a bit of practice we communicated using elaborate gestures and simple sentences! I probably learned more Chinese on that day than I would have going to classes for a semester!

We visited the serene Confucius Temple, and the gorgeous Matsu Temple. In the temple parking lot, I watched a group of guys with elaborate costumes and face paint dancing to the beat of huge gongs. I jumped in and actually danced with them! Yep. It is recorded for posterity on Tiffany’s phone. Later that evening, Tiffany took me to a traditional vegetarian Buddhist restaurant for one of the most delicious meals of my life! Naturally we took dozens of selfies and couplies, which are super hip in Taiwan.

I will always treasure that special day, when a complete stranger made me welcome in her world!
