Costa Rica is the most stable democracy in Central America, and has had no standing army since 1949! While abolishing the army, Costa Rica made a promise to replace the army with an army of teachers. Today, the country has a 97% literacy rate.
One of the most valued environmental destinations, over 25% of Costa Rican land is used as protected parks and refuges. Home to more than 5% of the world’s biodiversity, it is a nature lover’s paradise! More than 10% of the world’s butterflies live here!
Ticos and Ticas (Costa Rican men and women) enjoy the Pura Vida – a very relaxed, stress-free, happy, positive lifestyle. And are extremely fun-loving and friendly.
Many famous pirates visited Costa Rica, and buried their treasure there – or so legend claims. Hunt for buried treasure, or go check out the Dia do los Boyeros – the annual oxcart festival. Have a local bruja (witch) give you a tarot card reading, or have a simple meal at the local soda. Learn how to dance the merengue and salsa, or tickle your taste buds with hot tamales. My best memory in Costa Rica was the horse-back adventure ride I signed up for. My friend Roger and I are wannabe cowboys with some riding experience under our belts. We headed out to a tourist ranch a few miles from San Jose, saddled up, and went for it. It was a really wild ride – through narrow mountain paths, across vast fields, across rivers and streams, through jungle terrain. The view was unbelievable! Small waterfalls all along the trails… But the fun part was when crossing a very very shallow river, Roger’s horse decided he wanted to pull off a “roll”. After that he refused to move an inch. We were soaked to the skin, and figured we might as well have a little swim ourselves. About fifteen minutes later, our experienced guide got us and the horses out of the water, and on the trail again. In less than half an hour we were completely dry. Fun times!
