Indonesia is an archipelago comprising of over 17,000 islands. It is the fourth most populous country in the world, with over 230 million inhabitants.
Influenced by trade and mingling with India and China, Buddhism and Hinduism found its way to the nation. Christian and Muslim traders also brought in their influences which survive to this day. The motto “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (“Unity in Diversity” literally, “many, yet one”) illustrates the history that has shaped modern Indonesia.
Despite its large and dense population, Indonesia has vast areas of wilderness that support the world’s second highest level of biodiversity. Volcanoes, Komodo dragons, Borneo and beaches make Indonesia a nature lover’s paradise. And let’s not forget Bali!
With a booming economy, diverse population, succulent street food culture, and love for relaxation, Indonesia is a great choice as a TEFL destination.

“One day in class my student Maha told me her sister was getting married. I didn’t think much about it, but two weeks later I received a beautiful invitation with a flower. I was excited about such a novel experience. I felt out of place when I arrived at the small village hall, but thankfully Maha was waiting outside for me. She grabbed me and introduced me to her parents who were receiving visitors at the entrance. With warm and genuine smiles, they made me feel very welcome. Behind them, young boys and girls in brightly coloured clothes waved flowers. The new couple sat on a raised dais, looking really young and shy and sweet. I drank some cold Cendol (a sweet jelly drink) while I listened to some really looong speeches, translated for me by Maha. And that’s when I knew I had done a good job. Maha was chattering away in English without even realising it. The wedding was beautiful, the food delicious, and I, as an outside visitor (even though I was pretty much a stranger) was treated with much respect and hospitality. It was such an incredible experience that taught me about the warmth of Indonesian people. ”
