TEFL Hungary interns will earn approximately US $1,000 – $1,200 per month after tax.

A passport from the US, UK, Ireland or Canada is required.

Friends, couples and even families with children are welcome to apply to TEFL in Hungary. Flexibility in location is key to ensuring a placement in the same school or the same area.

We recommend having a minimum of $1000 USD to cover initial expenditures, incidentals and a safety buffer until your first salary payment comes in.

Applicants will need to obtain a clear criminal background check.

It may be possible to accommodate a well behaved pet with the right documentation.

The Orientation includes survival language lessons every morning, workshops on various topics such as your role at school, working with colleagues, expectations from students, effective lesson planning, and the grading system, along with practice teaching, feedback sessions, regional contact meetings, introductory history and culture lessons, outings, and an introduction to local food and drink.

There are two hiring periods for the TEFL internship in Hungary. One is at the end of August, and the other is in January. There may be some positions available outside of the main hiring times, but not many.

Your employer will have furnished accommodations awaiting your arrival.

Teachers are covered under Hungary’s national healthcare system, which includes doctor visits and hospital stays.. Teachers often find the local healthcare services to be adequate to above-average. Teachers are also required to purchase travel insurance before arriving in Hungary.

Non-natives who have lived in the US, UK, IR or CA for at least 10 years, and holding a bachelor degree are eligible to apply for our Hungary TEFL internship.

As of 2024, a degree is required to Teach English in Hungary.

A standard English teaching placement in Hungary is 10 months in length (Aug start). Starting in January allows for a shorter 6 month contract (and a $300 discount on the internship fee).

Accommodations are included throughout the program, including the orientation and the placement. Housing is generally a private, furnished apartment within walking distance or near public transportation to the school.

A letter from a doctor will need to be submitted after initial acceptance into the program.

Placements occur all over the country, from mid-sized cities and towns to rural areas. Some locations include Mako, Kalocsa, Szeged, Debrecen, Pécs, Gyor, Hajduszoboszlo, Oroshaza, and more.

Knowing Hungarian is not necessary. During the orientation, survival Hungarian workshops are conducted to help with the transition into the new environment.

There are a wide variety of schools available to teach in. Most are bilingual elementary or high schools.

In addition to all public holidays, teachers also get a week off in autumn, 2.5 weeks off for Christmas, and 1.5 weeks off for Easter.

Full visa support and residence permit support are included.
