Chile has a strong growing economy and a modernized infrastructure. While teaching English to business professionals is the mainstay, classes for children and students planning to take the TOEFL or IELTS are becoming more popular. It is better to have a bachelor degree along with a 100 hour plus TEFL certificate to secure a position. The major cities, including Santiago, Valpairaso and Antofagasa have the most opportunities for EFL positions. The country itself has stunning geography and offers easy accessibility to Chile, Peru and Bolivia. The salary in Chile is generally paid by the hour, with average rates being $10-$20US. The cost of living is expensive, so saving extra cash is difficult.

SECURING A TEFL POSITION IN CHILE

Chile is one Latin American country which advertises positions online for teachers overseas. Check popular online TEFL websites and English language newspaper classifieds to find schools. Even if a school does not have a position advertised, it is good practice to send a resume and cover letter just in case. Apply early as the process and time required to obtain a working visa can be quite long. A contract is generally required for a work visa. The best time to apply is either in November or end of February and March.

The most common positions are at private language centres. Private elementary or high school positions are also available, but tend to hire those already in Chile. Once in Chile, it is quite easy to network and start holding private classes to supplement your income.
