“My most memorable experience in Colombia has to be the night I spent in a cemetary. It started out as a drunken bet in a bar…

A buddy dared me to spend a night at the haunted Central Cemetery of Bogota. A spiral staircase called El Caracol, leading to a mass grave is said to be haunted by the spirits of the very worst criminals and their victims, and is the site of some really heinous crimes. Only an idiot would agree to spend a night there.

Braced by a few large shots of Aguardiente, I hid near El Caracol long after closing. My friend would wait for me outside the main gate (coward!), and I would join him at 3 am. By midnight the weirdness began. I swear I heard hollow moans, strange mist floated past me, and footsteps echoed behind me, stopping the instant I turned around. I definitely did not want to be there. The dare didn’t matter at that point. I started running. And then my heart stopped! The most hideous, disembodied face grinning at me with the scariest grin I have ever seen was standing in my way. I almost wet myself. Then the demon held out his hand and asked for some change, and sanity prevailed.

It was an old homeless drunk. Generous soul, he offered me his moonshine, and we chatted and drank until 3 am. Good times.”
